Math Sniper

I don’t know what I expect from a game called Math Sniper. I did have a momentary flashback to the Typing of the Dead game for Dreamcast where you typed words on your keyboard to kill zombies and bosses were a full paragraph. Of course, Math Sniper was nothing like that.

The idea of shooting people to help memorize your multiplication tables seems like a hilariously ironic setup. The game itself is simple to describe. You are a guy with a sniper rifle, and a math equation. You aim at a building that groups of people are walking out of and shoot the person who has the correct answer on their face. The idea itself could probably be the foundation for an interesting game, but it’s the presentation that fails here. The graphics are a let down, the controls to zoom aren’t fluid at all, and the hit detection isn’t quite up to par. There are no bells and whistles here. This was probably a great learning experience for the developer, and I hope it leads to some fun shooters with some more depth. But I don’t think many gamers will get much out of this tech demo. Again the only audience for this game would be parents trying to find creative ways for their kids to learn arithmetic; only the whole shooting people thing alienates that audience.

The demo itself was done in an interesting way. Instead of being on a timer, it would only display the same math problem over and over. This made the game very boring, and it’s not long before you try to kill everyone in sight.
