Jonny Crush

Johnny Crush is (as far as I know) the first XNA attempt at a FPS. It’s a single player only experience and the demo has you running around a city killing giant cockroaches and wasps.

The game surprising plays quite smooth and the controls work great. The concept of an FPS where you just kill everything in sight with no other objective is a good idea for a small scale game too. The full game offers 8 different weapons, which is more than enough variety.

What this game really lacks is polish. The graphics are flat out ugly; everything is so blurry it makes Wolfenstien look amazing. The voice samples sound like they were recorded over a cell phone, and when you are trying to create a Duke Nukem like character, that really ruins it. Presentation issues aside, the biggest problem is that the hit detection seems off. A lot of time when it looks like I should have killed a bug coming at me, it just keeps coming like nothings hit it.

Johnny Crush is a solid attempt at an indie FPS. I’m all about supporting indie developers as well, but like I’ve said in previous reviews, the FPS market is so crowded with cheap first rate titles; it’s hard to justify spending $10 on a game like this.
