Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise

Viva Piñata Trouble in Paradise is the true sequel to Rare’s Viva Piñata (part animals does not count). The game features the same gameplay as the original with a lot of new piñatas and some new gameplay features.

The Viva Piñata games are very deceptive. They look like simple cute kids game, but in reality they are an adult level simulation that requires some crazy micromanagement to complete… which is why like the original this game also has co-op play where a second player can jump in on the action to help get things done twice as fast. Although I’m sure that just makes things more confusing.

The goal of the game is lure as many piñata’s as possible to your garden, and convince them to become permanent residents. It gets tricky as each piñata has its own very specific requirements for both coming and staying. Also some piñata’s are natural predators for others, so if you don’t pay attention you make end up losing a lot of your smaller piñata’s to a larger one. Also you have to build places for each to live, and keep them happy so that they’ll procreate and have baby piñatas. There are also some “evil” sour piñata’s that will come and try to mess up your garden. You also have to watch out for them and chase them away. Of course the ultimate goal is to register all the piñata’s available.

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, takes all the original concepts and expands upon them. The game is just as fun, hectic, and difficult as the previous one. The new additions start with add-ons to everything. More piñata’s to collect, more places to travel on the island, more tools, seeds, and plants. As well as a fleshed out multiplayer mode. You can raise a garden with a friend, trade piñata’s, or play mini games together.

Also there’s a new objective type where you are asked to raise a certain type of piñata. Then load it up in a crate and fire it out a cannon to some kids party. That’s a pretty cruel sentence since you know the kids are going to beat it to death and eat its innards, but at least it adds more objective based gameplay.

Also there are a group of enemies who try their best to kill your piñata’s and destroy your garden every chance they get, they are much more aggressive in this game than the previous one, and can really wreak havoc on your carefully constructed garden.

Although this is a great game, it’s obviously not for everyone. It really comes down to if you like simulation games or not. There aren’t a whole lot of them now, but Viva Piñata is a nice, innovative title that adds to the genre.
