Ultimate Shooting Collection

Ultimate Shooting Collection is a very lame game title. It sounds just a bad as all the other shovelware coming out for the console. I half expect this game to collect Chicken Shoot, Extreme Paintball, and the Nerf Shooter game…
Honestly, if I didn’t hear about this game before it came out, I would have completely passed on it based on the name and cover art alone. Luckily I had heard what it was, and though I didn’t see it for weeks, I finally did find it at a small game store.
First off, this is not even a “shooter” collection, it’s a shump collection… and they are hardly ultimate. It does contain 3 low budget pretty obscure, Japanese arcade shumps. All three are unique, but very difficult.
Chaos Field is the only game you may recognize. It originally came out here for Gamecube. Its visual style was definitely inspired by Ikaruga, but it doesn’t look quite as nice. The game is mainly a boss rush. Each level has only 2 bosses, and there are massive. Your ship has its typical weapons, plus a sword that can destroy incoming enemy fire. You can switch back and fourth between the Order Field and the Chaos Field. In the Chaos field you do more damage, but the enemy fires twice as many bullets.
Karous has a pretty unique system. Your ship is equipped with tons of different ways to defeat enemies. It’s pretty confusing but makes for a pretty strategic shump experience. The graphics are pretty plain compared to Chaos Field, but there are some very nice visual effects. There are some text popups that come up as you play through the game, but the text is nearly impossible to read.
Radio Allergy allows you to choose from 3 different weapons off the start and power-ups increase the power and spread of each of those weapons. The graphics look like they were all created in flash. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just that it’s not the most interesting art style for a shump. It is however the most colorful game of the bunch so it’s a good contrast from the other two games. Like Karous, text also pops up on the screen through out the levels. It’s a little more legible, but you’re guaranteed to lose some lives trying to read it.
All in all you get 3 decent bullet hell shooters for only $30. Which is a pretty good deal. Especially since these are more obscure ones that you wouldn’t have played yet. If you love shumps this is a good purchase, but Castle of Shikigami 3 is a better game, and there’s tons of good Turbo Graphix shumps on Virtual Console that you can better spend your money on though.
