Trine

Trine is an interesting mix of a platformer and a puzzle game. You control and can switch between 3 different characters in order to get through the levels. Each character has several special abilities and may be needed to get through specific parts of the level.

The game also allows for 3 player co-op play, with one player controlling one of the 3 characters.

Trine is most reminiscent of the old Lost Vikings games, but also has a level up system. The platforming and physics aspects of the game are also similar to Little Big Planet.

The three characters are the Rouge, Mage and Warrior.

The rouge character can shoot a bow and arrow, and use a grappling hook to swing from wooden services.

The mage can levitate objects and well as create blocks that can be used as a platform.

The warrior can attack with his sword, and use his shield to block attacks and falling objects.

Characters also earn experience as they play through the game and can use points earned from those to upgrade their abilities. Items can also be found throughout the game to provide additional benefits to characters.

The puzzles are very clever and fun, and there seems to be an excellent balance between platforming and puzzle elements.

The game looks gorgeous and is fun but there are some minor hiccups.

At a couple of places in the game are areas that only one character can get through. So if you’re playing multiple players, each player has to use the same character to get through the part one at a time.

Also the platforming is a little floaty and when you’re trying to move multiple players through a tricky platform section at the same time, it can be pretty frustrating. If you’ve played multiplayer Little Big Planet, then you’ll have no problems because it’s not nearly as floaty or frustrating as that.

Trine is a great game all around, but the biggest problem comes with the price tag. Its $20, which seems quite high compared to other download titles. At that price I can only really recommend this game to gamers who really love games like Little Big Planet, and Lost Vikings and are looking for similar titles.
