Tatsunoko vs Capcom - Ultimate All-Stars

The next iteration in the Capcom vs Series (following Marvel vs Capcom, and SNK Vs Capcom) is here, and its Tatsunoko vs Capcom. WTF!? I know. Well first off Tatsunoko is a Japanese animation studio which was huge. Unless you were into anime when it first started coming out over here you probably won’t recognize any of their characters. Gatchaman is the most recognizable one, but the most recent character is Karas. Regardless of if you know those characters or not, the game is still really fun, and it’s been too long since we’ve had a vs game. The game is a 2 on 2 fighter, and is created in 2.5d like Street Fighter 4.

The roster isn’t as big as previous vs games, but one benefit is that the characters that are chosen provide an equal spread amongst titles. The capcom side isn’t hugely dominated by Street Fighter characters and introduces character from a bunch of other capcom titles. Noticeable entries are a mech from Lost Planet, Mega Man from the Legends series, a Rival Schools character, and even Frank from Dead Rising.

The game supports several controllers and features control schemes that suit the wii. For the gamecube and classic controllers the game uses a 3 button attack system. The buttons are for low, medium, and high attacks. There’s no specific punch or kick buttons, that depends on the character and which direction you press along with each attack button. This will make the game very confusing for veteran vs or Street Fighter players so take a minute to read the manual and check out training mode before you jump in. If you’re using the wiimote or wiimote/nunchuck control scheme the controls are dumbed down for use on those controllers. There’s only two attack buttons and special moves are much easier to pull off. I don’t recommend playing this way as you lose a lot of freedom and control, but for players who don’t really care about strategy this could help new players enjoy the game more.

The game features the usual Arcade, vs, survival, training modes, and also features online play, against friends or random players. It’s actually a pretty solid online offering since it’s on the wii.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom is a wicked entry into Capcom’s vs series, and is an incredibly fun fighter. It’s a good reason to hook the wii back up, and despite being a fairly hardcore fighter is still very accessible to new and casual players.
