Final Fantasy was a last ditch effort by Japanese game developer Square to create a hit game. Facing bankruptcy the company took a gamble on creating a game similar to the popular title Dragon Quest. The series was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi. The title Final Fantasy refers both to the game being Square’s last chance to make a great video game, and Sakaguchi’s last game. Of course Final Fantasy became “the little game that could” and ended up being a huge success. It ended up saving Square from bankruptcy and it caused Sakaguchi to continue developing video games. Eventually Final Fantasy became the best selling RPG series of all time. The series spans tons of sequels and spins offs (most not relating to each other), as well as several animated features.
In celebration of the upcoming Final Fantasy 13, and Final Fantasy 14 Online next year, we’re taking a look back at the series on a game by game basis.
