Saw. Wanna play a game?

Saw

From all advance warnings this really should be a terrible game. First off it’s a game based on a movie. Secondly there was little to no hype about it, and even now on release day, there isn’t a single review out. Finally the box art has some strange design choices, and the instruction manual itself only contains 3 pages of English instructions. What seems to be the only ray of hope shining on this title was the Konami logo proudly displayed on the front of the box. Konami is one of those companies that rarely does me any harm. Typically they release good games, and they have been working more and more with western developers to deliver good games. Also if anyone would put their name behind a Saw game, I’m happy it’s the company who does Silent Hill (the best survival horror franchise in my opinion). So I give it a chance, after all, it can’t be any worse than that Lost game.

First off I have to say I am a fan of the Saw series, while I think the gore is overdone in those movies, the narratives, visual aesthetic, and sound editing really draw me in every time. It is just a compelling film series, and despite that, I have no idea how the hell you’d go about making a game based on it.

The Saw game takes place between the first and second movies. Jigsaw has healed detective Tapp. After the seemingly fatal wound he received in Saw 1 (he was the character played by Danny Glover), and has set up a complex series of games for him. The game takes place in a rundown asylum. There’s ton of memos around which fill in some of the back-story and provide more info about jigsaw himself. Throughout the game you move through a series of challenges while exploring the asylum and trying to find your way out. You’ll rescue other prisoners from traps, and also fight of a small group of enemies who want to rip you apart for their own freedom.

The game starts of on a low note; you’re stuck in the “reverse bear trap” trap, and have less than a minute to get it off. There’s now way you’ll figure out what you need to do in that time, I died 3 times before I got it right, so it starts off with a frustrating puzzle. Luckily the whole game isn’t like that, and immediately after that scene you won’t be dying that often.

Nearly every trap from the Saw movies are represented here in one form or another. The level design is nicely done, it’s easy to know where you’re supposed to go next, but still leaves some room for exploration. Also the overall visual look is great, and really compliments the atmosphere and look of the Saw movies.

Tobin Bell returns as the voice of Jigsaw and does a wicked job narrating all the tapes and videos through out the game.

The game focuses much more on the puzzles than combat. There are only a handful of enemies throughout the game, and that’s a good thing because the combat is terrible. You can grab tons of different types of weapons including pipes, crutches, scalpels (what is this Condemned?), and like a traditional survival horror, you use L2 (why not R2?) to ready your weapon. X does a weak, faster, attack, and square does a slower but stronger attack. However even the fast attack is really slow. You have to hit the attack button as the enemy is running up to you. If he’s already too close he’ll beat you down before you get a chance. You can take a lot of hits, but you won’t be able to hit back unless you run away and try again. Luckily the enemies drop fast after only a hit or two.

Other ways to lose HP are usually from the traps spread about. Things like broken glass on the floor, or having to stick your hand in a toilet full of used drug needles.

The minigames for escaping traps or picking locks are well done. They’re not the most innovative, but are interesting enough not to be boring either and they aren’t really annoying or frustrating.

Thorough the game you can search containers around the environment for healing items as well, and the status screen keeps track of your objectives and a map of the facility.

I don’t usually mention this but the game shells out trophies like you wouldn’t believe, it’s not as cheap as some games, and it still will take a good deal of time to get the platinum, but there are plenty so it’s not uncommon to get 2-3 at a time during certain points in the game.

While there are not really any bugs, or problems worth noting, the game could definitely use some more polish. The cuts between some scenes can be pretty awkward and they aren’t consistent. There are also some frame rate issues through the game that can get quite annoying.

Finally, this game is not for the feint of heart. This is a mature title up there with Manhunt, and is just a brutal as the movies it’s based on. If you’re looking for physiological or supernatural horror like Silent Hill you won’t get it here. This is probably a turn off for a lot of gamers who find those games too scary.

Aside from the single player experience, there’s no reason to really go back. Overall the game is a good survival horror game, and Konami’s influence definitely shines through. The atmosphere is great, and leveraging the Saw licenses allows them to create a game with such really twisted setups that just wouldn’t fit in another game. If you’re a huge fan of survival horror games or the Saw movies don’t pass this one by. While it has its issues, it’s a great horror game and is worth a single play through.

  10. Posted October 9, 2009 at 10:19 am

It’s about 8-10 hours with no real replay value, so if you really love the saw movies or survival horror games then I’d say yes.

  11. Posted October 12, 2009 at 1:03 am

Is it me or does the PS3 version look too dark during gameplay? I have a PS3 but when watching 360 versions on here you can see BETTER not as dark. So is it just the youtube vid making it dark or not?

  15. Posted October 14, 2009 at 7:27 am

You can set up trip wires, but only where they were previously, you can’t build traps, and there’s no multiplayer. It’s worth checking out if you love the Saw movies or horror games.

  16. Posted October 14, 2009 at 7:28 am

The game is really dark in many areas, I haven’t played the 360 one to compare though.

  17. Posted October 15, 2009 at 4:01 pm

is this game is a long or short term game?!! coz i always like to play long term games n don like to be in my garbage rapidly?!! plzz don be late …

  18. Posted October 16, 2009 at 8:50 am

Depends on what you consider long term. The game is only about 8-10 hours with no additional modes. That’s a pretty common length (actually a couple hours longer) for a lot of games, but it is over that fast.

  19. Posted October 17, 2009 at 4:36 pm
