Final Fantasy 7
Weeks ago FF7 was released on the PSN in Japan. Around that time Square-Enix announced that the upcoming blu-ray release of Final Fantasy Advent Children would be the last thing they were doing with Final Fantasy 7 brand. While I’m sure that could change in the future, it seems to have squashed any hope of a Final Fantasy 7 remake anytime soon. The good news is that it also allowed SE to release FF7 on the PSN, a move they definitely wouldn’t have made if they were planning a remake anytime soon.
So here we are, 12 years later. FF7 has been pretty rare for quite some time now. Copies on eBay were going for an average of $160. It’s funny because I can still find copies of ALL the other Playstation 1 FF games new for $30.
Final Fantasy 7 takes place in a world where one large corporation (Shinra) runs everything. Shinra has its research scientists, police force, military armies and group of elite soldiers called, well, Soldier. They are based in the city Midgar and their presence there has created a huge socioeconomic gap between the rich citizens and the lower class that live in the slums. Shinra also uses mako generators to suck power from the planet called mako energy and use that power for research and new technology. However there’s a group of terrorists who believe what Shinra is doing is killing the planet. You play an ex-solider member named Cloud who teams up with a group called Avalanche and try to sabotage Shinra’s generators. Eventually it’s revealed that another Soldier member named Sephiroth has gone rouge and your group must escape Shinra’s forces while trying to stop Sephiroth from destroying the planet.
Let me give you some background info in case you weren’t a gamer when FF7 came out (since that’s the only way you wouldn’t know about it yet). FF7 was first in development for the N64, but was moved to the PSX because Square just couldn’t do what they wanted with the space limitation on the cartridge. FF7 took up 3 full discs, that’s 2100mb. N64 carts held something like 50mb, and you can’t swap carts.
The game was massive in scope. It was marketed more than any other game at the time. TV commercials and print ads were everywhere. It was the first FF7 game created in 3d and was shaping up to be the best 3d game to date. The old school fantasy world was abandoned in favor of a more futuristic setting, where a large (and evil) corporation is in charge of everything.
The first time I played this game I was amazed. The amount of animations happening during battles alone was inconceivable.
Loading up the game made me feel pretty happy that I took the time to copy over all my PS1 and PS2 saved games to the PS3 when I first bought it. The first thing I did was load up my final save game and test out the disc swapping mechanic. Plus fight some of the final bosses of course.
This video shows the disc swapping mechanics, and some of final battles in the game. If you don’t want ANY spoilers I would stop watching once the disc swap is complete.
With that bit of nostalgia out of the way, I start up a new game. I’m actually surprised how well the graphics are holding up. The graphics were a mixed bag to begin with back in the day, and that still holds true now. The pre-rendered backgrounds still look great. In fact they look just as epic as ever. The battle environments, monsters and characters look good too. They aren’t the most detailed models, but they don’t take away from the experience. The PS3 texture smoother and upscaler is really helping out too. The “exploration” character models were always ugly. They look like the models were taken straight out of Virtua Fighter 2, or Alone in the Dark 1. Just huge blocky character models, and in this case the PS3 actually hurts the game as a lot of the time the polygons will run into each other (poorly), or a side will be missing that can see into. But I hope that doesn’t affect your opinion of the game. You’ll get over the ugly models soon enough and the rest of the game is beautiful.
Graphics aside, the soundtrack is still awesome. The characters are still interesting. The story is still very strange and convoluted. (I wish it made more sense, but some people dig that)
The combat engine and materia system is still very fun. Sure the materia system is easy to exploit and make the game too easy, but that’s half the fun if you ask me.
To add some information the combat system plays like Final Fantasies of the past. It uses the active time system like FF4-6. The material system added a new level of character customization never seen before. Equipping material to your characters and linking some together enabled you to create some very complex character effects and load up a character with skills. Of course it got cumbersome later in the game where you’d spend hours customizing your characters.
Now, onto the real bad; FF7 came out before the analog controller was released for the PS3. That means you have to use the d-pad. And it doesn’t work well at all. You’re constantly going to get stuck on obstacles, and end up going in directions you didn’t mean to. Battles are fine, but moving around cities and dungeons is a pain. It’s not easy to get used too easy. This is really the only part of the game that doesn’t hold up at all.
I’ve put off replaying FF7 for along time. If anything I’d love to go back and play FF9 more. But I’m pleasantly surprised with how well the presentation holds up and I can see myself going through the whole game again. From this write up, I think you’ll be able to tell if FF7 is right for you. If you’re unsure, $10 is a wicked deal so try it out.

Playing the game directly from a disc on the PS3 has been… problematic. The disc is in good shape, but I booted up my end game and found that the system doesn’t emulate the battles very well. Some of the sound effects are ruined, and when I summoned Knights of the Round to hit Sephiroth, the system began to chug horribly. It took about twice as long as it should to get through the Knights of the Round summon, because everything slowed to a crawl. And then the game froze up during the ending cut scene, but the audio kept going.
This isn’t the first game I’ve had emulation issues with. Silent Hill has similar rendering/freezing/sound issues.
Perhaps it’s because I’m using a system that has software emulation? I don’t know. But it pretty much ruins the experience.

i’m currently playing my PSX copy on my 80gb PS3 and i wanna know if the PS store version would be worth the 10 dollar download, the emulation on the PSX version is pretty glitchy (graphics-wise) with some noticeable slow-down.
so i was wondering if it it’s worth it? also, if anyone has it on an 80gb PS3, can you use prior PSX saves on the PS store version?

yeah you can use the saves on your old memory card just get the adapter for it…but ive heard that they are defective half the time so be careful and read around first

WOW WOW! You’re really coming off as a child. FF is like a movie because you pretty much do nothing. You press a button and the cpu does all the work. Seems like a waste of money. At least in Star Ocean you have a real combat system. FF is pretty much an anime with crappy voice acting.

If you like KH, then go get FF Versus 13. Has a different story and has the battle system of KH.

@MagixMabinz The graphics on VII were some of the best of the late 90′s psx…maybe I am a mark for enjoying putting my imagination into a game but I think that sometimes less is more…even with games. I had more fun playing FFVII…or even Ultima Exodus in the late 80′s(which by any standard has horrible graphics).
x-2 has the same battle system as this…

It’s too bad that graphics alone can make or break a game these days…going back to Ultima, what made that game stand out was gameplay…FF7 had ILL graphic at that time, nowhere near the best though, it was it’s gameplay and storyline that endured people to it. I’d really like to see more focus on making fun games with deep stories coupled with the graphic evolution we have now.

Yeah nowadays everything is oriented to graphics, I mean gameplay and story is the MOST IMPORTANT part in game!!! They should start doing remakes with “mid” graphics like 3DOT Game Heroes it has nice effects and all yet they kept the 8-bits air in the game.
As long as the game has an amazing story, a good/decent gameplay I can give a rat’s tail about graphics

@reignjuste i’ve only played the series until FFX-2 and i have to say that FFVII was my first and yea it was that great, i did all stuff possible in the game with almost 100hrs of play, but FFX is also that great, maybe even better than FFVII. People don’t mention it very often cause maybe after VIII and IX dissapointments some of them quit playing the series. i began playing FFVI and maybe i’ll find some time avaible for VII after that.

So it’s looking pretty unrealistic to happen!” So yes, Square Enix understand how much people would like a remake, but its unlikely to happen. Besides, where did you see the date for late 2012???

I’ve been an FF fan for some time now, and for me, this was the one that kept me playing. I dled it from the PSN as soon as i saw it was available.

The problem with FF12 and FF13 is not entirely the gameplay. It’s the really the MMORPG style fighting, crappy storyline, and boring music. I’ve been playing FF since GameBoy and I want magic, I want mystical powers, I want Zeus Cannons and Maseki, undead train heists. I have no interest in large maps, uber graphics, surround output. Thats not what a game is, thats what a game has. And FF no longer has it. God I hate Enix, why did they merge with Square?

@muzeitgeist FF13 had great music, storyline wise wasn’t the best for a FF. Hell even FF Tactics had an amazing storyline, and that’s just an extra lol.
I love the FF series still though, cause the graphics and characters always blow me away, but the storylines are getting abit weaker, plus the games are getting easier. FF13 “The hardest FF yet” I beat that game pretty quickly, not even rushing =P, and I’m not even that great of a FF player. I remember being stuck on FF7 at the begining LOL, got stuck trying to escape the bomb. 8 I almost threw out, and 9 made it halfway xD. They used to be so challenging. 10 was somewhat diffcult, but i beat it

FF7 did a lot for the gaming genre, but in all reality, it’s just another Final Fantasy, all the games up to 10 had their goods and bads, i myself prefer FFT from the PS1 over any other.

they’d make some mighty damn good cash off a remake though, especially since most of the people that played this game would be in their early adult lives and would still be interested in playing it 
that’s the original, it’s out for the psp, although sony did make a demo opening when the ps3 came out and it looks fantastic, square have always said there will be no remake, shame, i’d buy a ps3 if they did it’s that good a game, if you havent played it, get an emulator( psxfin ) and download it, it’s truely epic.
I bought a PSP just so I could download this game… It took me 15 hours of work to pay for everything, and it was worth every penny.
Gotta wait for PS4 come out and hope Square to remake this game.(They said they don’t have plan to remake this game now or in the close future, hopefully they’ll change their mind)

@AmidstTheBloodshed: I use HDMI cables with the game itself is set to normal screen and tried various ratios and resolutions on top of that: but the game’s polygon characters always look pixelated, imo. But the game is worth putting up with it and after awhile, you’ll get so into the game that you’ll forget about it. If it still bothers you, transfer it to your PSP: it looks great on it.
