Wolfenstein 3D

I was surprised to see Wolfenstein 3D popup on PSN and XBLA last week, I had heard that there was a new Wolfenstein in the works, but didn’t think they would think to use the original to market it. I’m half surprised they didn’t try to re-release last gen’s “Return to Castle Wolfenstein” instead. Now for only $5 you can experience the first popular FPS ever made. The game consists of 6 episodes each with 10 levels. The 10th level is a boss. For 60 levels, Wolfenstein does last a good while for such an old game.
Anyways, as much as I’d like to review a game this old, there’s nothing I can really say. This is a good port, the graphics are clean and the controls are as smooth as they ever were (which is not really).
If you’ve never played Wolfenstein check out the video. The gameplay is your typical old school fps: kill Nazis, find keys, and get to the exit. All while searching for hidden rooms and treasures. There are 4 weapons in the game, the knife, pistol, machine gun, and gatling gun.
Of course the game supports trophies, and that’s where a neat new feature comes into play. After completing a level you’ll earn a trophy, which translates to $1000 to spend in the new Wolfenstein. The game also includes a trailer for the new Wolfenstein that looks pretty interesting and probably takes up the biggest chunk of the 200+ megabyte download.
The game doesn’t really hold up. It plays well enough and is still fun, but not for very long. If you want to re-experience the original Wolfenstien, or if you’re just curious this game you may want to check it out. The price makes it a good deal for the gameplay, but most people have probably had enough old school FPS action by now.
