Up is pretty much what you’d expect from an animated movie tie-in. It’s a fun, family friendly, platformer. That statement alone should be enough to tell you if you’d want to play it or not. There are some neat gameplay mechanics thrown that work well for co-op play, and there is a 2-4 player competitive mode that you may come back for so it’s got some depth to it.
First off, if you don’t know the movie an old man makes his house fly away so he can get away and accidentally brings a young boy scout with him for the ride, and they end up in a crazy land of danger and adventure.
The gameplay is interesting; you play as one of the two characters and can switch to the other at any time. You need to use each characters abilities to get past certain obstacles. It’s sort of like the Lego games in that respect. There are some ledges only the boy can cross, and catapult like objects that the old man and launch the boy off of. Of course it’s best if you bring a friend along to play along side with, so there’s no need to switch back and forth.
Both characters are tethered to the floating house above them. Which makes for an annoying visual problem since you can always see the bottom of the house and its shadow, but at least keeps one player from running too far ahead of the other, which is always a problem in co-op adventure games.
After completing the first level there’s a waterslide like game. Here, you try to collect as many coins as you can.
All in all, this is a great game for kids, not so much for anyone else. It’s not trash like the usual movie tie-ins and at least it offers co-op so you can enjoy it with a child or friend.
