PixelJunk Shooter. More elements than shooting actually.

Pixel Junk Shooter

PixelJunk Shooter is the fourth game in the PixelJunk series by Q games. It follows PixelJunk Racers, PixelJunk Monsters, and PixelJunk Eden. Unfortunately, the title Shooter does little to explain the game itself and with the over saturation of twin stick shooters on the PSN, the title alone turned a lot of gamers away from the game.

PixelJunk Shooter focuses very little on shooting in fact. The premise of the game is that you are dispatched to a planet where a team of miners and scientists were researching and have sent back an S.O.S. You job is to go through the areas of the planet, and save the trapped survivors.

The game uses twin stick controls, but the second stick only aims. You have to use the triggers to fire your cannon or hook. The cannon is used for a variety of things, killing monsters, blowing through certain types of land. You can also hold down your cannon to shoot missiles. You can use your hook to grab standard survivors, pick up diamonds in the mines, and carry certain things around that can help you through the levels.

The goal of the levels is to rescue all survivors, though you may lose some. They can be shot by accident, killed by environmental hazards, or grabbed and killed by enemies in the area. You also need to watch out for diamonds which are needed to open up new areas. Each level has diamonds hidden in in plain site, or within areas that you can shoot out, or in hidden areas through the level.

The levels are also setup like puzzles. There are certain elements in each level that make the levels interesting to get through. There are pools of lava, volcanoes, pools of water, streams that can be shot open, and magnetic liquid that can make things interesting. There’s also gas that can be ignited, and ice, that can be melted or broken apart, etc. The way the elements work together is important for clearing levels, and makes the game feel more like a puzzle/exploration game, than a shooter.

Water will turn the lava to sand that you can shoot through. Lava will also melt ice. You can also get different kinds of ships to help you through the levels. The water ship can shoot out water which will freeze when it comes in contact with ice, or cool down lava. The hook on the water ship can also pull big blocks of ice apart. The lava ship an shoot out lava to melt through ice as well.

The game consists of 3 areas with 5 stages each. Each area ends with a boss fight. The game is shorter than the last two PixelJunk titles, but still clocks in at 10+ hours to accomplish everything.

Despite the misleading title, I think everyone will have a great time with this game. It feels like a retro title, but it looks and sounds great, and plays like a fresh new genre. Of course if you are looking for an action packed twin stick shooter, this will be a let down.
