Need for Speed Shift

Need For Speed Shift seems to be a departure from the usual series. While up until this point the NFS games have been pretty much devoted to taking what people liked from the Fast and Furious movies (crazy, awesome, street racing), and ditching the BS story. It’s a formula that seems to have done pretty well with the series releasing new iterations nearly yearly, and selling like crazy.
Serious racing games can typically be divided into two categories. Simulated, or Arcade-y. Arcade-y racers are the fast paced, easier to play ones like Crusin’ USA, Burnout, Motorstorm, etc. Simulation racers tend to appeal to aspiring professional driver. These are games like Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, etc. They offer incredibly realistic driving mechanics, and usually an insane amount of car customization. They are much harder to control, and you have to be a pretty amazing driver/player to really appreciate them.
While I’ve always typically labeled the NFS series as being somewhere in the middle, it usually tipped over into the arcade-y side of things, but Shift seems to be aiming for the other direction.
While the game is straying away from its street racing roots, a lot of what was great about that style of racing has carried over into this new game. Style plays a big part of how you drive now. You can either be a precision or aggressive driver. There’s a point system that gets you points for each impressive maneuver you pull off. These are grouped in aggressive or precise tricks. A simple example, is carefully driving so that you pass a car within inches of hitting it and come out without taking any damage, or just ramming it out of the way. As you rack up these points your driver level and style will change. The style will either be precision or aggressive and depending on which you end up as you’ll unlock some different events to take part in. Also your driver level increases with the points you earn. You can get up to level 50 and each level awards you some bonuses for more customization and sponsorships.
There are also tons of badges you’ll earn for various things while you race. They act as a sort of in-game achievement system and there are a TON of minor badges which lead to different levels of major badges.
Of course you still earn cash to buy new cars, and there’s a wide selection available. If you’re too lazy to earn the cash you can simply purchase cars off online with real cash, but I would hope you don’t support a pay model like that. You can also deck them out however you want with a fairly robust customization mode, and despite being more of a sim racer; you can still outfit your cars with Nos for that added boost of street racing power.
The game features Career mode, quick races, and online. The second two are pretty self explanatory, but the career mode is really deep.
The first race is a great concept; it’s a one lap track with no driver assists on. Depending on how you do, the game will recommend some default settings for you to play with. The settings are nicely worded too, so if you suck like me, you don’t feel like a real noob for having to choose “easy” like in other racing games. The main settings are opponent difficulty level, driving assists, full or visual only damage, and manual or automatic transmission. They’ve really tried to put a setting in there for every type of gamer, but I found myself having a hard time getting the sweet spot. The setting either had me blowing by ALL the competition and just cruising through the race unopposed, or flat out losing every race. It was tough to strike a balance.
The races in career mode a quite varied. There are quite a few different race events and a ton of locations that open up as progress. To unlock new events you need to get stars from races. You can get 1-3 stars for getting 1-3 in any race, and there are two additional stars per event which are tied to completing certain goals (getting so many points, or drifting so much.)
Overall, if you were a NFS fan, but started to get bored with the series, this may be a good time to come back. If you’re not a huge racing fan, then this probably won’t get you into the series, but for big sim racing fans it’s a great tie over until Forza 3 and GT5 land.
