Motorstorm - Arctic Edge

Since the initial game was released shortly after the launch of the PS3, Motorstorm has become and incredibly popular PS3 series. The success of the two PS3 entries Motorstorm and Motorstorm Pacific Rift prompted the development of this 3rd game for the PSP and PS2.

Motorstorm: Arctic Edge brings the game play to the other Playstation consoles, and while it sacrifices the HD graphics and amount of on screen vehicles it retains all of it’s fun.

The biggest overall change to the game is the setting. Like the name implies the game takes place in a completely arctic environment. This is a good change for both game play and graphical elements.

The design of the snow covered tracks allow the tracks to look simple yet still as visually appealing as the other iterations of the game. One major plus side to the environments is that the paths and turns in the course are easier to spot and you always know which ways you can go.

The game play changes that results from the new environments also makes the game play somewhat differently from the previous titles. While the hectic arcade style racing stays intact, the environmental hazards are slippery areas in the tracks, icy bridges that collapse and avalanches that can cover or push away vehicles on the track.

The game still has the hectic nature of the previous titles by allowing multiple vehicle types on the course. The game features 8 different classes of vehicles, some of the vehicle types from the other games have been replaced for ones that make more sense on the arctic tracks. Vehicle types include ATV, Big Rig Trucks, Bike, Buggy, Mud Plugger, Rally Car, Snowplow, and Snowmobile.

The main career mode has the player completes a progression of levels where new tracks are unlocked by winning currently available races and events. There’s also a free play mode, time trial mode and vehicle customization mode.

In the customization mode you can change the look of any of the 24 vehicles you’ve unlocked by changing the colors of the different parts of the vehicles and adding stickers.

The game are limited to 10 vehicles in a single race. The PSP game supports six player online multilayer while the PS2 games supports 4 player split screen.

The PS2 port of the game is also very well done, the graphics look great for the system and it controls great.

Overall Motorstorm Arctic Edge is an incredibly fun racing game for the PS2 or on the go. If you love the original series Arctic Edge will not disappoint.
