Fat Princess

“Fat Princess” is without doubt one of the funnest games I’ve ever played. Although there are different game types, the main objective is simple. Bring back your princess while keeping the enemy’s princess in custody. It’s basically capture the flag with one difference; Imagine a hungry princess instead of flag while the other team is constantly feeding her with cake. The result? Well, let’s say a super sized princess which you’re better not to try carrying alone. The gameplay is simple and easy to pickup. You start in your castle and you choose your class by picking up a hat. There are 5 classes in this game: Worker, Warior, Ranger, Mage and Priest. They each have their own powers and weak points and they all should work together closely in order to win a game.

Workers can feed the princess, bring wood and iron, repair broken gates and upgrade other classes. Each Warior have a sword and shield and they can block arrows. They have strong charged attacks and their life is more than others. Rangers can shoot from far distances. Mages can throw fire or freeze the enemies. Priest can heal teammates or suck the life our of enemies.

The game relies highly on team strategy. You find the class you’re comfortable with within the first hour or so but you should be ready to change class when necessary. Call me crazy but in terms of strategy I believe this game is more like Warcraft than any shooter game.

There are bugs here and there and there are problems with online gameplay but I’m sure they will be fixed soon. One little thing I hope they add to the game is to create a dedicated server. For example, last night when I was going to bed, I didn’t mind leaving the game running and hosting online games but apparently I had to be in the game I’m hosting which I could not!

Anyways, I can’t think of anyone not enjoying this game! I believe for $15, you can’t go wrong!

Tip: Never try to carry the oversized princess alone!

Since this game was announced there was no doubt it would be a huge hit. Thankfully they delivered the experience that we were expecting.

Fat Princess is a very interesting take on the tried and true capture the flag game type. There’s a lot of strategy involved and the class system really reminds of something like Team Fortress (or maybe that’s just because of the medic, er priest class).

All in all, this game is wickedly fun. There are a couple things to note though.

The single player is throw away, it really only serves to get you started. There’s also a gladiator mode to see how good you are at combat. But if you’re not planning on playing multiplayer then avoid this game completely.

With multiplayer being the main focus of the game, it’s annoying that it can be tough to connect to a game. The online just isn’t up to par yet. It’s not terrible, but sometimes you’ll be disconnected and it can be tough to get into an actual game.

Finally is the way the “save the princess” scenario is set up. With so many players in the game (32, CPU players will be added if there aren’t 32 players) it can be really tough to complete your goal. Strategy is really required to be successful and since a lot of gamers don’t use headsets it’s impossible to co-ordinate many attacks. I’ve had games that have been over in a matter of minutes, and games that have lasted over an hour. The longer games get pretty frustrating so I do wish you could set some kind of sudden death option for those types.

All in all this is a wicked game. The online connectivity issues are the only thing that might want you to wait and see if they get them resolved, but aside from that this is a game everyone can enjoy.
