G-Force

It’s like a requirement nowadays! Every movie, especially the animated ones must have a game ready at launch! Most of them have nothing to offer and they present the cheapest form of what can be called a game!

What can I say, G-Force is a movie game, so it follows the same flow, right? WRONG! Not even close! This game is surprisingly fun!

I should be honest here. I had no interest in playing this game and only tried it to criticize it and write about it but first time I put the disc in, I was sucked in, playing for 4 hours straight! G-Force was nothing like those cliché left-right-jump-n-shoot games. The story is interesting, the concept is neat and the gameplay is smooth and fun! Even after several hours of playing you’ll find completely new types of enemies that you’ll have to discover how to deal with. Puzzle parts are smartly designed and while they require a fair amount of thinking they won’t stop you for long.

On the other hand, I wasn’t a big fan of its 3D experience with the Red-Cyan glasses. It’s certainly a good start but there were things that were not considered when they built the 3D option. Things like, avoiding or minimizing use of certain colors (like red) which cause a big contrast between the picture received by each eye. I could only play it on the 3D mode for half an hour and had to switch it back to 2D to be able to continue. The following video is taken from the gameplay in 3D mode, so you’ll need Red-Cyan glasses to see it properly.

Overall, I really enjoyed playing this game BUT the question is if you want to buy a 10-15 hour single player game? Watch the videos and you be the judge.

G-Force is both a kids game and movie tie in, which rarely makes for a good game. However, a lot of care went into the G-Force game and the developers have crafted a game that’s fun to play and doesn’t fall into the usual trappings of movie tie in games.

I don’t know the movie so I’m not sure if the games plot is a retelling or separate event. It was pretty interesting and starts with you playing as Darwin trying to break into a building and hack into their system. Shortly after something goes crazy and all electronic devices get a mind of their own and start attacking everyone. There are blenders, waffle makers, PCs, etc. It’s up to you to figure out what’s going on and stop the crazy appliance invasion.

The game gives you a wide arsenal of weapons, moves and abilities to get you through the stages. You can double jump and sprint, hang off of ledges and shimmy around, and you have a jet pack that you can hover or shoot straight up with. You have an electric whip like weapon that functions as your melee attack, and while you only start off with 1 gun, you can unlock 5 others to bring along with you. You also have several gadgets, including infrared glasses. You can also take control of a fly called Mooch at any time to get through some areas. Mooch and activate switches, and carry items back to you, he also has the ability to slow down time so you can fly him through some hazardous environmental traps, like fans.

You can also find silver discs which will allow you to use the “chips” you’ve collected throughout the levels to upgrade certain weapons.

The game itself seems to be about 10hours long. There doesn’t really seem to be any additional modes or features, but at least that’s a decent length for a single player game, and there are several things you could play a second time for.

The surprising thing about G-Force is how well designed it is. The game is constantly throwing new elements at you, you never feel like you’re doing the same thing over and over, which is usually the problem with these types of games. The game combines tons of elements from other genres to create a compelling and interesting experience. It’s got platforming, shooting, stealth, exploration, and puzzle elements. And now of it feels incomplete. The game looks nice and controls smoothly.

If I had to compare G-Force to another game, it would probably be Ratchet and Clank, while it doesn’t have the memorable characters and villains that the R&C series has, it certainly uses some similar gameplay elements. All and all, G-Force is a polished (read well built) game, that’s fun and actually a great kids game. Since there are so few of those around, if you’re looking for a gift for a young gamer G-Force is probably as good as it gets.
