Echoes

Echoes is a tough game to describe. It’s a fun take on a puzzle game. The idea is to collect all the gems in a level that appear one after another. The interesting thing is that instead of playing against enemies, you’re playing against yourself.
This is done through a very interesting game mechanic, where as you pick up each gem, a ghost image or echo or your last move will appear, the more gems you pick up the more echoes appear and you’ll have to avoid them to complete the level.
So the interesting thing is you have to plan out all your moves right from the beginning. You can to move in a way that prevents you from being swarmed by past images of yourself as you collect the later gems in the level. The controls are very smooth and you leave a trail of footprints as you walk, which is a great visual indicator of where a new echo will walk.
There are safe areas you can not be attacked in which is pretty handy. There’s also an item that will destroy nearby echoes, so another strategy may be to create echoes that all intersect in the same area where you can destroy them all.
The levels are also designed in such a way that you will most likely be running into your echoes no matter how carefully you play. This makes for a neat, frantic experience.
Hitting an echo isn’t instant death though. In fact you have a pretty generous health bar to complete each level. But I could see this game getting quite difficult at the later stages.
The demo provided several stages to try out and I highly recommend downloading it.

Such a simple but unique idea! That’s smart.
