Data East Arcade Classics

I usually LOVE these game anthology discs. Things like the 3 Midway classics collections, the 2 Capcom collections, and the SNK arcade collections will never leave my personal stash of games. The Data East Arcade Classics collection however, just wasn’t for me.
The game is available for wii, and contains 15 classic Data East arcade games. The problem is that most of that aren’t very memorable.
Games include:
Bad Dudes vs. DragonNinja
Everyone remembers Bad Dudes from the NES. The arcade version is much nicer looking, but at the end of the day it’s still just a mediocre beat ‘em up.
BurgerTime
I never really played BurgerTime so I didn’t care much for this classic arcade game, but if you did here it is!
Burnin’ Rubber
A pretty fun racing game where you avoid obstacles, other drivers and try to hit jumps to launch over pits in the track. The only comparison I can think of is the racing game in NES’s Adventure in the Magical Kingdom.
Caveman Ninja
This game came out for SNES here as Joe ‘n Mac and is one of the strongest titles on this collection. Still a very fun co-op experience.
Western Express
Old school western with platforming/comabt, and shooting gallery like scenes.
Heavy Barrel
Another NES classic top down shooter. Like the Commando series, great 2 player fun.
Lock ‘n’ Chase
A bad Pac-man rip off, the only difference is that the map changes by having doors that open and close.
Magical Drop III
A puzzle game, where you pull down orbs and push them back up to create groups that are the same color. Very fun puzzle game.
Peter Pepper’s Ice Cream Factory
The ultra rare sequel to BurgerTime and also the most frustrating game on this collection. Impossibly hard because the enemies move SO damn fast.
Side Pocket
A billiards arcade game.
Secret Agent
Action game with tons of different action sequences.
Street Hoop
Good arcade basketball game, feels like NBA Jam, but with 3 on 3.
Super Real Darwin
A hard and mediocre shoot ‘em up.
Two Crude
Another mediocre 2 player beat ‘em up. Set in a futuristic wasteland.
Wizard Fire
Surprising, I found this to be my favorite of all the games. It’s a nice looking 2d top down action game in a fantasy world. You choose from four characters (and you can play co-op), and go through the stages. It kinda reminds me of Gauntlet Legends.
All games also feature an achievement like system where you get awards for completing certain tasks. You also have unlimited credits you can pump into them so you can keep playing for as long as you like!
So, why am I down on this collection despite saying that roughly half the games are quite fun. Mainly it’s because I have no nostalgia for most of these games. I haven’t played a lot of these classics before, and just don’t care about them now. Even the ones I said were fun I found myself not wanting to pick back up after I’d played through them a couple times.
The game is a decent value at only $20, and if you do have some love for the games on it, then definitely pick it up. But if you haven’t really played them before than I can’t really recommend it.
