Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth

Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth is a remake of the original gameboy game “The Castlevania Adventure”. The plot has stayed the same, but game play and level design is completely different.

Castlevania games, for the unaware, are a series of side scrolling platformers, where members of the Belmont clan battle through Dracula’s castle and defeat him. The series had many strong entries in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, and hit it’s peak with the PSX title “Castlevania Symphony of the Night”. Since then the series has had all it’s 2d iterations developed for portable systems like the GBA,DS, and PSP, and has had a couple of failed attempts to update the series to 3d.

Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth, marks the first 2d made for consoles since Symphony of the Night. It’s also the latest in Konami’s ReBirth series, preceded by Graduis, and Contra ReBirth.

The game features Christopher Belmont, as he enters Dracula’s Castle to do battle. The game takes place 100 years before the original Castlevania for NES. (reminder: the original 3 Castlevania NES games are always on Virtual Console for 500pts each.)

The Adventure ReBirth, feels like a classic 16bit Castlevania. All the elements classic items, game play elements, and enemies are there. The new level design is a huge improvement over the original game which contained only linear levels with no staircases, and ropes to climb between segments. The new level design features multiple paths to get through each level, as well as a couple hidden areas in each. The staircases are back which add for more vertical action instead of just always moving forward. The game also features 6 levels now instead of the original 4.

Sub weapons have returned, all weapons from the 8bit series are back: Dagger, Ax, Cross, Holy Water, Stopwatch, and Key. The usual whip upgrade mechanic is also here, where collecting certain items will upgrade your weapon first to the chain whip, then to the fire whip. The fire whip which was introduced in the original Castlevania Adventure, allows your whip to spit out a fireball projectile for a certain number of hits after obtaining the upgrade.

Overall the game is a really well done Castlevania game, and is the update that the frustrating GB title deserved. I recommend it to any Castlevania fan! It’s currently on WiiWare for 1000 wii points.

Thanks for pointing that out I uploaded GOW3 at the same time and did have the correct titles, so the uploader must have gotten confused.
