Bubble Bobble Neo

I was really surprised to see this pop up on XBLA. Taito had a string of remakes recently released, but I hadn’t heard anything about Bubble Bobble being remade.

Bubble Bobble is the precursor to the Bust a Move series and features the same characters (though a completely different style of gameplay). If you are unfamiliar with the game Bubble Bobble was an old Arcade/NES game where you played 2 little monsters that could spit out bubbles. The goal of the game was to clear each stage by capturing the monsters in a bubble then popping it to destroy the monster. There were various effect bubbles that come into play in some stages, and you could bounce on your own bubbles to get more leverage.

The original game featured over 100 stages, and this remake seems to have recreated them all very accurately. The new graphics look great. The characters are now cell shaded models, and the gameplay is exactly the same.

Aside from the original mode, there is also a new arrange mode. This mode allows for 4 player co-op player and tons of new elements. The biggest new addition is diagonal platforms, which change up the game way more than you would think.

The full version features even more modes and seems to be a decent value for the asking price of 800 MS points. If you’re a fan of the original pick it up, if not try out the demo. This game is incredibly fun multiplayer so make sure you have someone to bring along.
