Bioshock 2
Since the original Bioshock was released a lot of its fans have been eager to see what 2k will do next with the franchise. There’s was a lot of excitement as well as skepticism about the sequel. On one hand the man behind the series (System Shock and Bioshock) wasn’t involved with this one and only a part of the original development team remained. On the other hand the original Bioshock presented an amazing world ripe for expansion and improvement.
Bioshock 2 returns to the underwater city of Rapture. The city is still devastated following the war that preceded the first game but is still populated by many citizens that have such an addiction for the drug Adam that they’ve become savage. The drug is harvested by “little sisters” who are protected by “Big Daddies” and can give powerful abilities to users.
The game is split into two segments: The single player campaign, and online multiplayer. Both are completely separate and were even developed by different teams. This makes for two very different experiences.
The single player campaign takes place 10 years after the events of Bioshock 1, as a Big Daddy who was seemingly killed by splicers before the first game awakens with no idea of what’s gone on in the meantime. As a big daddy the game takes on a very different focus. The main driving point of the game is to reconnect to the little sister you’re bonded to.
The game plays much like the original bioshock, as the big daddy you can learn and use plasmids and use items in the same way. The biggest difference is the ability to use Big Daddy weapons such as the drill and rivet gun. The main mechanic of searching areas to find little sisters that you need to “free” them from their big daddies in order to save or destroy them is also much like the first game. You can also adopt little sisters to follow you around and harvest Adam from corpses. As a big daddy you’re also able to leave the city from certain areas and explore the ocean bed. The biggest change is of course the storyline which is just as intriguing as the original game.
The multiplayer mode contains several games each of which typically support 6-10 players. The multiplayer games take place during the civil war that preceded the first game. Several maps are based on locations from the first game, but before they have become as devastated as they were in Bioshock. Also the weapons and plasmids are mostly lifted from the first game. There’s a ranking system which goes up to 40 and each rank will earn you new ways to customize your character.
There are 7 modes for multiplayer which co-responds to the usual deathmatch, capture the flag, territorial, and survival modes of other FPS games. The use of plasmids is the biggest thing to set this apart from other games. Aside from weapons and plasmids you can rig, and hack turrets and other devices to make things more interesting. There’s also a big daddy suit available in most levels that you can get into for increased power.
Bioshock 2 does a lot of things right, and the new features are definitely welcome, but it doesn’t really do anything to convert gamers who couldn’t get into the first game. The multiplayer mode is a fun addition that adds some life to the game, but like the single player it isn’t Call of Duty or Halo. A lot of gamers that expect that are disappointed. Bioshock is on my “must play” list. I think it’s an amazing experience and the sequel lives up to that. But it isn’t an amazing FPS game. If you didn’t dig the first one, this won’t change your mind. But if you enjoyed the first one that you will definitely enjoy Bioshock 2 just as much!
