Bayonetta

Bayonetta is a new 3rd person action game from the creator of Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe and was a highly anticipated release from Platinum games, who developed the game for the Xbox 360. Sega published the game and handled the port to the PS3.

The game features a witch named Bayonetta who was involved in a war between two factions of witches in ancient Europe. Bayonetta awakens after a 500 year slumber with no memories. In the modern world she’s constantly attacked by groups of angelic monsters works along side friends Rodin and Enzo. Bayonetta main quest involves discovering he lost past. Along the way she encounters a familiar face in the witch Jeanne who she remembers knowing, but not whether she was a friend or foe.

Bayonetta moves around quickly and can double jump to get to high locations. She can dodge out of enemies attacks, and dodging at the right time will activate witch mode in which time temporarily slows down allowing her to get the upper hand on enemies. Witch time is also sometimes used to solve puzzles.

The biggest feature of Bayonetta is also the one that might turn some gamers off of the game. It’s the over the top insane game play and cut scenes that make Devil May Cry look like a documentary.

The combat is pretty crazy even by action game standards. Bayonetta has several attack buttons including a punch, kick, and shoot. These attacks can by strung together to form some very complex combos. The game play is slightly different than Devil May Cry in which the timing of attack buttons made the series difficult to master for some gamers. In this case the combos are much easier to pull off and the addition of an additional attack button allows for more complex combos. The game also features several weapons. Bayonetta can wield a sword or whip, as well as multiple temporary weapons dropped by enemies. Two sets of weapons can be equipped at any time and Bayonetta can instantly switch between the two sets of weapons.

Bayonetta sports 4 guns, two in her hands, and 2 on her boots. Any combo can be ended by seamlessly switching to firing either set of guns. Bayonetta’s biggest weapon is her hair which she can transform into giant hands or boots that beat around their enemies, or into deadly death traps used as finishing moves. Bayonetta can also activate a mode where she spins around shooting enemies around her, the player can control her aim and choose enemies to focus on during this attack. Bayonetta can also transform into different animals to deal damage and get through certain areas of the game.

Enemies drop halos which are the main form of currency in the game. Trading halos to Rodin, Bayonetta can buy or upgrade weapons as well as purchase tons of items.

The main game features 5 difficulty modes. The normal mode is balanced nicely. It provides a decent challenge without being as difficult as you’d expect from the creator. There are two easier modes for gamers who are unfamiliar with action games at all and want to start off nice and slow.

Bayonetta is an incredibly fun game and a great game for experienced players and newcomers to the genre. The setting and characters are interesting, but the plot and overall craziness of the game play would turn off gamers who crave realistic games. Even with the huge amount of action games coming out this quarter I recommend giving Bayonetta a try!
