James Cameron's Avatar: The Game
If you haven’t heard, Avatar is the new franchise by writer/director James Cameron. It’s getting huge press for being his first movie since Titanic, and seems to be more reminiscent of his earlier action titles, as well as being one of the most expensive movies ever made. The Avatar game is set 2 years before the movie and was developed by Ubisoft.
The game is a 3rd person free roaming action game where you play as a new recruit who’s just arrived on the planet. You can choose from a set of different men and women to play as, each with their own unique avatar, but your choice of character doesn’t change the game much.
The game starts off slow; the tutorial doesn’t really do a good job explaining the special skills and level up system. There are some additional tutorials in the menu that can help you through though. You’re sent on a series of boring missions that are mainly just to help you get used to the controls and learn about the world.
At any time you can equip 3 weapons, 4 skills, and a suit of armor. You get experience for killing enemies and completing missions and as you level up you will automatically be awarded new weapons, armor, and skills. There are quite a few weapon types including pistols, rifles, machine guns, flame throwers, grenade launchers, etc. There are also quite a few useful skills. There are ammo dispensers all over for when you get low as well.
One thing that does change the game is an option early on to side with either group. You can choose to stay a solider or join the naavi rebellion. The missions change drastically from that decision onwards and make a second playthrough worthwhile for fans.
The game is a third person shooter, and throughout the game you’ll change from your human to your avatar form. Each form has pros and cons, the Avatars are nearly twice the size of humans and run very fast. The local wildlife also isn’t as aggressive to you in your Avatar form. In your human form you can ride in vehicles. There are land, river, and air vehicles. The buggy is very sensitive and can be tough to drive; it slides around, and can be thrown off course by hitting even the smallest to obstacles. It also not only stalls in the shallowest areas of water, but proceeds to explode. The boats drive much better, and if you end up on land you can get out and nudge it back into the water. The aircraft has guns and missile launchers on it, but it can take a while to get used to the control.
The game is basically set up as a free roaming game where you can explore the world that’s open to you. There’s a ton of optional objectives for each area which include exploring the entire area, collecting cell samples, killing so many creatures, fixing broken devices, etc. Your next story mission is always highlighted on the map as well.
Overall I was pretty surprised with how fun the game was after you get through the initial set of missions. There are a lot of good game design decisions that went into this game. What is missing is the level of polish that would make it stand out. It’s just feels incomplete. There are quite a few minor bugs, and it’s noticeable that the end result was a bit rushed.

Avatar is more action, it’s open, but more linear, and less polished, Brtual Legend is more free roaming but it’s strategy elements turn off some players though.

I actually played this game and it was pretty good for a movie game. The enviorment was absolutely beautiful, but it seemed like they focused more on the graphics than the actual gameplay itself. You can choose between the two races, the Nav ‘i and the RDA. When you play as the Avatar person you have to make your alliance with the peaceful Nav ‘i or the RD
A. I would recommend you play the Humans first because they’re funner to play than the Nav ‘i. This is more of a rent game than a buy game.

the game utilizes a “quest” mission system, when you finish your mission you check your map find the nearest chopper pilot or buggy or exit and check your map and look for avaialble quest/missions to fly to

The movie is much better than the game. If this game was 19.95$ it might be worth getting. Graphics are good but not great. Game play is almost too repeatative. Over all a 7.5/10.

I don’t know, if it is fun to play, perhaps it is, but why is there no collision, no AI or at least some better textures? It wouldn’t be bad, it the avatar links himself with the horse-creature, or if they give him a better animation, when he awakes. Not that these points were the most important for me, but the movies bonus was the graphics. I can’t see it represented in this game : S

Well just so you guys know, there was an interview of the director of the game and he said that the game wasn’t intended to be like the movie because they know that gets way too repetitive and stereotypical. The game idea for Avatar was to originally be a MMORPG until James realized how difficult it was to make a successfull MMORPG. They also mention that it was made with the thought of a SPRPG not MMO, so it allowed you to create ur own sequeal =). All of those facts are true, u can even check

@euan777 we start as RDA and work for them. we have owe own avatar. u do some q for them and the nur gonna find a mole. when u find him its Dr. Harper. he tells u something ..
then u choose to be na’vi or RDA by killing the oppsite faction. when ur na’vi u go out on a journey collecting shards throu Pandora. then u have o find some ”songs” to find the Well of Souls when u find it your done with the quest. then u can just run around and kill gaurds for more xp. u can have more saves than 1:)

@ironlykalion619 The game came out/was in development before the movie was released. The designers either where not privy to details like that, or where forbidden from releasing said details before the movie premiered.

@dude25665 u can still use that kick-ass crossbow, or the m60, but im addicted to using the dual bladed staff, but they should have added the crossbow and all navi animals in multiplayer

@mikenator55 the only reasoning of calling this a bad game is that the na’vi are a bit awkward to controll,and that the story is told as if you had seen the movie so people new to the series might be a bit messed up on the plot of the game, and the camera can’t always keep up with them. also they said that since this game is 3D compatibal it was pretty awesome that way and in that form this game is suposed to be a large portion better.
