Assassin's Creed II
Assassin’s Creed had some really crazy hype. Unfortunately when it actually released some problems with the gameplay cause a lot of gamers to overlook what was great about the game and it didn’t quite get the recognition it deserved.
For Assassin’s Creed 2 it does seem like Ubisoft has taken a lot of the criticism to heart. A lot of the gameplay issues with the previous game have been addressed, and this time around Assassin’s Creed 2 does live up to the hype.
When we last saw Desmond, he had uncovered the memories of his ancestor Altair, but the Templar facility was attacked by the remnants of the assassin’s guild in order to free him. Assassin’s Creed 2 starts right where we left off. Lucy helps Desmond escape the building and takes him to an new base where they will train him using the memories of another ancestor. This time you play as Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Italy during the Renaissance period. Unlike Altair, Ezio is not an assassin at first. After some unfortunate events, Ezio must learn to become an assassin.
The script this time around is much better and all around the actors deliver. Nolan North (Uncharted 1,2, Prince of Persia) returns as Desmond Miles, Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars, Heroes, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) returns as Lucy, and are joined by other return voice actors and other amazing new talent. The overall cinematic feel of the game is also much improved over the first.
The game takes place over within four areas in Italy. You can explore and complete missions in Venice, Rome, Florence, and the Tuscan countryside.
Like the first, Assassin’s Creed 2 is an open world game in which you move around exploring the cities and completing various missions. Your main goal is to keep a low profile while you complete a series of assassinations and help the citizens of the cities.
The control scheme is similar to the first game where each button represents a different body part. (Triangle: Head, Square: Left Arm, Circle: Right Arm, and X: Feet). You can hold down the buttons to keep actions done with that limb active. Holding Circle while moving through a crowd will automatically push all in front of you out of your way. Hold X while moving will automatically make your character jump across gaps, and climb walls that you move into. It’s an interesting system that works well, and allows for complex platforming without frustrating jumping mechanics.
The biggest complaint of Assassin’s Creed was the limited mission types and repetitive nature of the game design. Assassin’s Creed 2 fixes those issues by having nearly 3 times the amount of mission types, and by offering a better mission layout overall. It doesn’t feel as structured as the first game, meaning you aren’t just following the same mission pattern over and over.
One of my favorite new missions are the tomb exploration missions. There are 6 tombs in the game you have to get through and each one feels like it’s take right out of Prince of Persia, or Tomb Raider. They’re just huge platform and puzzle rooms you need to get through.
There are also ALOT of new features in the game. You can collect money from chests hidden throughout the world, as well as by looting the enemies you kill. This money can be spent at a variety of vendors on a ton of merchandise including weapons, armors, maps, new robes, and other miscellaneous items.
For combat there are a ton of different weapon types that Ezio can use. Guns are now available for use as well, so Ezio has some more ranged attacks. You can also get two hidden blades to kill two enemies at once. You can also use poisons. You can also leave the Eagle Vision mode turned on as you move through the world, which makes it easier to spot things of interest.
There’s also more ways to get around. Ezio can ride horses, swim and drive boats, plus use a glider. You can hire groups of people to help you move around undetected and distract your targets, or you can blend into the already moving crowds. You can also throw money on the ground to have civilians get in the guards way. Also there are fast travel stations throughout the game that will let you instantly jump to another location for a small price.
A new feature is notoriety which affects how easily the guards will detect and chase you. It increases as you complete missions, but you can decrease it with some actions like bribing heralds, killing officials, or ripping down wanted posters.
Also in the game you’ll get a villa that in the equivalent of what the Assassin’s guild used to be. Here you can train, talk to your friends, store your weapons and collectibles. You can pay for upgrades as well, and tourists who come to visit will earn you some income. It’s a more dynamic environment which is way better than the guild in the previous game.
The game features a database system now as well that will give you access to additional information on the characters and locations you come across in the game.
The collectible flags from the first game are replaced by feathers. While I found the flags quite fun to collect, the feathers are a pain in the ass. The are much smaller, and way harder to spot. When you got down to the last couple flags in each region it was annoying to find the last couple, but now you experience that much earlier on. Of course the feathers are mostly for gamers who want the platinum/all the achievements, but it’s just not even fun to collect them anymore. They might as well be the pigeons in GTA4.
There’s also a series of glyphs hidden in the game. Finding each glyph has you solve a small puzzle to uncover it’s meaning. Together they all put together a video that can be seen which unveils some mysteries in the storyline.
There are several other collectibles as well, including statues, portraits, and codex pages.
Also you’ll get the chance to kick some ass with Desmond in the game. No longer is his only task to walk to and from the bed room after each chapter. He’s got his own story mission which makes him an all around better character.
The game features quite a few graphical issues. While there’s not much slowdown, I noticed a ton of screen tearing. There are several other minor graphical issues as well, that really makes me feel like the game wasn’t that polished. It could just be that they’ve just built on the Assassins Creed code that was not properly optimized for the PS3.
Assassin’s Creed 2 features a couple of extras like the lineage movies and the game is also the first the feature Ubisoft’s Uplay service. You can access it from the main menu to unlock additional weapons and content, as well as check your stats across all (upcoming) Ubisoft games that also use the service.
Overall the game is a huge step up form the first. In fact this is what I think all gamers expected from Assassin’s Creed 1. It’s a great experience, and almost all the issues from the first are resolved. It’s a great mix of stealth, speed, and action based missions. If you’re ok with some graphical problems and minor glitches, than you should check out this game!

I didn’t see any significant improvement in terms of graphics however the game now supports 1080p video output.
I don’t think so. You can see in this video (at 2:05 and 7:55) I run away but its not as easy as it is in the first game.

Unless the story demands you finish the fight (which is rare) you can always run away. But you have to press L1 so that you’re no longer locked on to the enemy.

And if the Ps3 version DOES have a shit load of jaggies, then expect the 360 version to be as bad, or worse than this, because ps3 was the lead development platform for AC2. They ported it to the 360.

Well since Ubisoft is always showing off the PS3 version, I’d assume that it’s the better looking one. Of course they might just be trying to show that it doesn’t look as bad as the PS3 version of AC1.

Well I’m sure it looked fine on an SDTV, but when compared to the 360 version on an HDTV it looked significantly worse. There were also some glitches on the PS3 version.

Well SDTVs are usually a lot smaller than HDTVs so the imperfections in the graphics aren’t as visible. Again, the PS3 version looked great, it just suffered from performance issues and inferior graphics than the 360 version.
AC2′s lead platform was PS3, AC1′s lead platform was 360. AC2 was ported to 360, AC1 was ported to PS3.

Course. There couldn’t be an Online mode, Well, There could be, But I am sure it would suck. The game is known for the engaging Story, So don’t worry about an Online mode. The Story is good enough to last day’s.

how about multiplayer, where one guy gets to play the assassin and the other 8 or 16 have to play guards, with something that the assassin has to retreive from a specific position on the map, and the guards would just have to chase the assassin, i guess that could work…

When I’m gray-ish color it means that I’m hidden. when that silver shine happens I’m either getting into being hidden between the crowd or I’m getting out of it.

it depends if you use stealth to kill them or not, if you dont then any nearby guards will attack you and other civilians will run away but if you do use stealth then you should go unnoticed.
Does the game smudge so much for you, too? By smudging i mean occasional horizontal lines going down the screen.

I always loved the first A.C. But, for what ive seen, this sequel corrects all the flaws in the 1, which means:
A BIG load of medieval weaponry, throwing money to streetbeggers, gondola and wagon steering, many ways of assassination, realistic Italian environment, swiming, helping ladies stuck in small islands, kingdom to city direct entrance, variety of enemies class, more get-to-know the assassin (Altair was misterious), more fight/blend/sneak techniques and taunting enemies!

Yes this game IS BETTER than modern warfare 2….BUT the two games are COPLETELY different from one another. AC2 is a lot of fun, worth it. MW2 is a lot of fun as well, so why not play both?

Since it has been out longer, some people expect the online gameplay for games like call of duty to be extremely good just because there are more people out there with xbox’s.

That didnt make any sense at all, describe it more because in assasins creed 2 when you climb a tower or building you CAN get in trouble with guards but usually you can avoid them without them attacking or chasing you.

It’s actually one of the worst stealth games I’ve ever played, but one of the best and most fun platformer I have ever played, each city was large enough to annoy the crap outta me trying to go from one side to the other. BUT there were what four or five cities that all fit on ONE dvd disc, that’s saying a lot, imagine what they’d be able to do for a PS3 exclusive blu-ray AC

@Kerynski I had AC1 on PC and then I got a Xbox 360 and then got AC1 for the Xbox 360. (My PC couldn’t play it at its full potential.) The controls are alot easier and better free flowing on console. AC is a better console game then a PC game.

Xbox Kinect is NOT a Playstation 2 Eye Toy add on. it’s much more advanced. For instance the Kinect is able to detect the motion of the body in 3D.
